Deir el-Ballas is the site of an ancient Egyptian city on the west bank of the Nile, located in Upper Egypt. It was governed under Horwy, the fifth nome of Upper Egypt. The city was founded sometime during the Middle Kingdom and turned into the administrative capital and royal residence of the late Seventeenth Dynasty. The city's original Egyptian name may have been either Per-djed-ken or Sedjefatawy.
