The Hellenistic Period of Ancient Egypt (332-30 BC) began when the Macedonian Empire conquered Egypt from the Achaemenid Empire.

The Ancient Greek word Hellas (Ἑλλάς, Ellás) was originally the widely recognized name of Greece, from which the word Hellenistic was derived. The term "Hellenistic" refers to that which is influenced by Greek culture, in this case, the East after the conquests of Alexander the Great.

In 332 BC, Macedonian ruler Alexander the Great conquered Egypt as he toppled the Achaemenids and established the short-lived Macedonian Empire, which gave rise to the Hellenistic Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, founded in 305 BC by one of Alexander's former generals, Ptolemy I Soter.

The Ptolemies had to fight native rebellions and were involved in foreign and civil wars that led to the decline of the kingdom and its final annexation by Rome. The death of Cleopatra VI ended the nominal independence of Egypt, resulting in Egypt's becoming one of the provinces of the Roman Empire in 30 BC.

Argead Dynasty[]

The Argead Dynasty was an ancient Macedonian royal house. Under Alexander the Great, the kingdom of Macedonia gradually gained predominance throughout Greece, defeated the Achaemenid Empire and expanded as far as Egypt and India.

Ptolemaic Dynasty[]

The Ptolemies rose to power over the Egyptian fraction of the former Macedonian Empire.
