Since the early New Kingdom, the High Priest of Amun at Thebes was the most powerful High Priest. Their absolute height of power was the 21st Dynasty, when the High Priest of Amun ruled over Upper Egypt while the pharaoh ruled over Lower Egypt. The God's Wife of Amun was effectively and uniquely a High Priestress in the Amun cult.
