Mutemhat-Sitamun Karomama-Meritmut (transliteration: kꜢrmꜤmꜤ mry.t-mwt, meaning: "Karomama, Beloved of Mut") was an ancient Egyptian God's Wife of Amun of the Twenty-second and Twenty-third Dynasties during the Third Intermediate Period.

Name[]

As a God's Wife of Amun, Karomama's name is written inside a cartouche. Unlike her predecessors in office, she did not make use of the prefix; Duatnetjer, which simply means Divine Adoratrice, for her nomen. Instead adopting an epithet; Meritmut (mry.t-mwt, "Beloved of Mut"). Like one of her predecessors as God's Wife, Maatkare, Karomama also made use of a praenomen; Mutemhat (mwt-m-ḥt, "Mut is Foremost"), complemented by the epithet Sitamun (z.t-ỉmn, "Daughter of Amun").

Family[]

Karomama-Meritmut is believed to be identical to Karomama C, who is a daughter of Pharaoh Osorkon II and Queen Karomama. Her sister, Tashakheper, may have briefly preceded her as God's Wife and died unexpectedly.

Biography[]

Presumably during the reign of Osorkon II, when Karomama held the post, the title of Divine Adoratrice of Amun began to be held separately by the heir apparent to the office of the God's Wife of Amun, with the latter appointing the former. The reason for this might have been the unexpected death of Tashakheper and to henceforth provide a more smooth transition in the position of God's Wife. As a result, Karomama took her younger sister Qedmerut as her heir apparent and Divine Adoratrice.

Qedmerut predeceased her older sister during the reign of Osorkon III. Karomama then adopted Osorkon III's daughter Shepenupet I as her heir, who eventually succeeded her as God's Wife of Amun.

Burial[]

Karomama's tomb was discovered in 2014 in the area of the Ramesseum at the Theban Necropolis.
