Hotepibre Khamudi was the last Hyksos Pharaoh of the Fifteenth Dynasty during the Second Intermediate Period, when Egypt was divided between the Theban-based Seventeenth Dynasty in Upper Egypt and the Avaris-based Fifteenth Dynasty of the Hyksos, who controlled Lower and part of Middle Egypt.

Khamudi ruled from Avaris in the Nile Delta as a contemporary ruler to the Theban pharaoh Ahmose II in the south.

Name[]

Khamudi was known as Archles (Aρχλης) in Africanus' and Eusebius' version of Manetho's Epitome, while he is known as Assis (Aσσις) to Josephus. Khamudi assumed the throne name (or prenomen) Hotepibre, which is transliterated as ḥtp-ỉb-rꜥ, meaning "Pleasing the Heart of Re". His better known birth name (or nomen) is transliterated as ḫꜣmwdy and is usually preceded by the Hyksos title ḥḳꜣ-ḫꜣswt, meaning "Ruler of Foreign Lands".

Reign[]

Khamudi suffered defeats at the hand of Ahmose II and lost all Egyptian territories after the fall of Avaris c. 1530 BC.[1] He fled to the fortress-city Sharuhen in the Canaan, but was defeated there also by Ahmose. His fate after that remains unknown.
