Shoshenq A, sometimes called Shoshenq the Elder, (transliteration:ššnq) was Great Chief of the Ma of the Twenty-first Dynasty during the Third Intermediate Period. He is mainly known for being an ancestor of the Twenty-second Dynasty pharaohs.
Origins and Family[]
Shoshenq was Great Chief of the Ma or Meshwesh, an ancient Libyan tribe. He inherited this title from his father, Paihuty. His wife was the King's Mother Mehytenweskhet A, who is actually better attested on monuments than her husband; thanks to those monuments and to the genealogy reported on the stela of Pasenhor, it was possible to determine some information about Shoshenq's family ties.
Shoshenq A and Mehytenweskhet A had at least two children, the 21st Dynasty pharaoh Osorkon the Elder, and the Great Chief of the Ma Nimlot A, through whom they were the grandparents of the future founder of the 22nd Dynasty, pharaoh Shoshenq I.[1]
Burial[]
The whereabouts of Shoshenq A's tomb and mummy remain unknown.
