Syene, or Sunet in ancient Egyptian (transliteration: swn.t), was a town on the east bank of the Nile river in Upper Egypt. Syene was governed under Ta-Seti, the first nome of Upper Egypt. The site of the ancient town is located at the modern city of Aswan. On the Nile directly to its west lies the island-settlement of Elephantine.
