In Egypt’s Western Desert, an aquifer flows north from Sudan, running in an arc of five oases roughly parallel to the Nile. These oases have been inhabited by humans since 5000 BC. During the ancient eras of Egypt, four Nileward oases (Kharga, Dakhla, Farafra, and Bahariya) were used as a bulwark against Libyan invasions. Siwa Oasis is still inhabited by Berbers who have assimilated into Egyptian culture. The Siwan language, Siwi, is one of the oldest languages still spoken in Egypt.
